What to get dad for Father Day

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO GET DAD FOR FATHER DAY?!?

Gift-giving is a stressful process, especially for commercialized holidays like this Sunday celebration of male progenitors. In the Ideal World, family presents pop with perfect presents that represent their love and devotion. The gift reveals the giver ability to afford it and skill in hiding it until that poignant moment when all cameras are poised to immortalize his look of joyous shock that you got him just what he wanted.

I going to suggest some single malt Scotch whiskies, but the process of selecting the correct one for the man in your life can apply to any type of gift, for anyone close to you, at any time.

Think about what he might like, or want. It nice to get him what he needs, but for this day, go for indulgence and satisfy a want. This means you need to know your man, and if he your spouse or parent, I hope you know more about him than what happens when you pull his finger.

Don keep the secret, tell him the type of gift you want to give him beforehand. For example, I like to get you a bottle of Scotch. Think of it as foreplay (also a nice gift).

Ask him what kind of whiskies he likes. If he doesn know, find out what kinds of cocktails or even food he likes. Just spending a little extra attention discovering what his tastes are can be gift enough. All guys like being paid attention to by the ones they love.

Based on that info, go shopping.

BevMo! currently has three spirits on sale buy wow weapons for Father Day: Jack Daniel Single Barrel Whiskey, Glenlivet 15 Scotch, and Eagle Rare Bourbon. Each is about $5-$7 cheaper than usual.

Single barrel anything means just that: the bottle was filled from the contents of one specific barrel in the warehouse. Most others may come from multiple barrels of the same type/year, naturally they must with any blended spirit, like Johnnie Walker. My JD single had a first note of red apple, then a strong buzzing finish that went away like a small town parade.

And The Glenlivet, of course, deserves special recognition. They almost the biggest single malt Scotch in the world, wow gold and they expanded their distillery a few weeks ago to charge towards number one. They have a good range of expressions, many introduced in the last decade. If your dude doesn know if they like whisky at all, but they willing to try it, The Glenlivet makes a perfect introduction (same goes for you, too).

The standard is The Glenlivet 12, which should be available in any liquor store anywhere (around $23). The number means how many years it was resting in a barrel, gaining the flavors of the wood. Usually it is once-used American oak casks that previously held bourbon, but sometimes they spend a few years in a Spanish sherry (or other used liquor) barrel as well.

Younger Scotches typically have a lighter taste, and The Glenlivet 12 is no exception. As Scotches age, they get darker and start taking on fruiter, woodsy notes. They also get more expensive and harder to find.

The Glenlivet has a 12, 15, 18 (some regard the 18 as the best tasting for the price, about $55), 21, buy wow weapons and 25. They also have a separate expression called Nadurra, the Gaelic word for natural. Nadurras aren chill filtered, a process that sometimes means the whisky gets cloudy when chilled or water added (if it is under 46% ABV). Some like this, some don The Nadurra 16 is very good (costs about $50), and there a limited edition 1991 Nadurra at $70 and up.

If you're rich and you know it, the ultimate Father's Day gift would be a bottle of The wow gold Glenlivet Cellar Collection 73. Released in June at a cost of about $1,250, it's the eighth expression from the premiere Cellar Collection and comes from the three best casks filled in 1973. If that's a key year for your guy (a birth, marriage, etc.), this makes for a very nice reminder of his uniqueness.

A fun event might be for different people to get dad different bottles (assuming everyone is of legal age), and have a tasting this Sunday. Or talk to the spouses of your man mates and blood kin, and try to get them to buy their guy a different bottle. Then everyone comes together over Scotch Sunday night and shares in a rollicking celebration.

By the way, it OK to add a little cold water to whisky, especially if you have something at cask strength, usually noted by being over 50% Alcohol By Volume. Whatever works for you, or him.

The toast is written but pronounced like

Note: For those whose fathers are serving overseas, you can NOT send them alcohol, but that doesn mean you can have a bottle waiting for their safe and swift return.

Disclosure: Jack Daniel's Single Barrel bottle was comped to me, and The Glenlivet gave me many bottles and flew me to Scotland to see their distillery expansion. I have not tasted The Glenlivet 73 yet (but I tried).
